The compositional work on these film sequences, including specific notation and transcription techniques inspired by conversational analysis, results in a new text-score that allows for speech to be performed as a “total sound object”. These are at once moments of conversation and sound objects, which contain, together with the “clear message” carrying the “meaning”, the whole mass of “parasitic” sound events – accents, stutters, sighs, hesitations, misfires, noises…

In “Voicing Through Saussure” Barras and Demierre explore the basic building blocks of language. The duo’s re-elaboration and re-composition of Saussure’s work is fully embodied in a score-text, spread out on stage in its concrete dimensions, brought to life in the utterances of these two masterful sound artists.
